How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home + Adjustable Ring Guide

How to measure your ring size at home

Ordering a ring online can feel a little nerve-racking when you are not sure of your size. The good news is that you do not need a jeweler to get it right. With a few things you already have at home, you can find your ring size in just a couple of minutes.

Below are two simple, reliable methods. Try both if you can, since a quick double-check gives you extra confidence before you order.

Method 1: The string or paper strip wrap

This is the easiest way to measure a finger you can wrap. All you need is a thin strip of paper or a piece of string and a ruler with millimeters.

  • Cut a strip of paper about 4 inches long and a quarter-inch wide, or grab a short piece of string.
  • Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger, where a ring would sit.
  • Mark where the end overlaps with a pen.
  • Lay the strip flat and measure the length up to your mark in millimeters. That number is your finger circumference.

Once you have the circumference, match it to a ring size chart. As a quick reference, a circumference of about 51.9 mm is roughly a US size 6, and about 54.4 mm is roughly a US size 7. If you land between two sizes, size up for comfort.

Method 2: Measure a ring you already own

If you have a ring that fits the right finger well, you can skip the wrapping. Set it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter, straight across from one inner edge to the other, in millimeters.

An inside diameter of about 16.5 mm is close to a US size 6, and about 17.3 mm is close to a US size 7. Compare your measurement to a standard chart to find your match. This method is especially handy for surprise gifts, since you can quietly borrow a ring the recipient already wears.

Tips for a fit that feels just right

A few small habits make your measurement much more accurate.

  • Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest. Morning measurements can run small.
  • Measure when your hands are warm, not cold. Cold fingers shrink and can trick you into sizing down.
  • Remember that wider bands fit more snugly, so if you love a chunky style, consider going up a half size.
  • Your dominant hand is often slightly larger, so measure the exact finger you plan to wear the ring on.

Take two or three measurements across a day and go with the most consistent result. Little changes are normal, and averaging them helps.

Prefer to skip the math? Try open-size rings

If measuring still feels fussy, or if your size shifts with the seasons, adjustable styles are a lovely solution. Our open-size stackable rings have a small gap in the band that you can gently widen or narrow, so one ring can comfortably fit a range of fingers.

That flexibility makes them wonderfully forgiving. They are perfect for gifting when you are not sure of someone's size, easy to move between fingers depending on your mood, and simple to layer for a dainty, stacked look. Because they adjust to you, there is far less second-guessing at checkout and far less chance of a return.

To adjust one, hold the band on both sides of the opening and ease it open or closed with light, even pressure. Avoid twisting or over-bending, and make small adjustments rather than forcing it all at once, so the metal keeps its shape.
